Shalakya Tantra

Shalakya tantra is one of the eight specialty branches of Ayurveda mentioned in the classics. It encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the head and neck.

It is analogous to the contemporary disciplines of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Dentistry. References to the practice of Shalakya Tantra go as far back as the time of the Vedas and Upanishads, even until the Rigveda, which is considered the oldest text of mankind available.

Ashwini Kumaras, the celestial healers, were said to have cured blindness, and deafness, and even restored severely injured eyes.

The Charaka Samhita, Sushrutha Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, the greater trio of the Samhita texts, have detailed descriptions of disorders of the eyes, ears, nose throat, and oral cavity.

This includes surgical corrections, as well as procedures for cosmetic corrections.

Shalakya OPD is frequented by patients with refractive errors, conjunctivitis, eyelid, and eyelash disorders, retinopathies, reduced or impaired hearing, tinnitus headaches recurrent nasal blocks, allergies oral cavity disorders like mouth ulcers amongst many others.

The practitioners of this branch, known as Shalakies, are also well versed in the specialized treatment procedures called Kriyakalpas. These procedures are specifically designed for disorders of the eyes. There are detailed descriptions of therapeutic procedures related to the head, nose, ear, and mouth as well.

Shalakya tantra provides a wide scope for the preventive and curative aspects of diseases about the head and neck.
