Shalya Tantra

Shalya Tantra is said to be one of the oldest disciplines in the field of Ayurveda that primarily follows the Surgical school of thought and its origins are believed to have been propounded by Lord Dhanwantari to his disciples, foremost of whom was Acharya Sushruta, who compiled this knowledge to bring forth Sushruta Samhita for the benefit of the ailing masses of the world.

Other Departments

This treatise bears witness to some of the first surgical remedies to diseases where medical line of management failed and hence became a comprehensive field for diseases pertaining to general surgery, Orthopaedics including Musculoskeletal ailments and fractures, Marma, Surgical oncology, Urology and others. There are startling revelations in the understanding of conditions like Intestinal obstructions, perforations, principles of gangrene, abscess, non healing ulcers and their elaborate managements.

The various surgical instruments developed during the ancient times have stood the test of time and have evolved over the ages to our present day utilities. The branch of Cosmetic surgery also evolved during this time period and Acharya Sushruta has been conferred with the title of “Father of Plastic Surgery” for he was the first to explain about grafts and flaps essential for it.

Today Shalya Tantra bears the responsibilities of our Ancient Seers who envisioned a disease free society with the use of principles and techniques that can mitigate the suffering where other disciplines have tried and failed. The refinement in surgical discipline has led to the establishment of a branch capable of handling diseases such as Appendicitis, Cholecystitis, Hernias, Benign Cysts and tumours, Fractures and dislocations, Varicose veins, Ano-rectal disorders like Hemorrhoids, Fistula, Fissure in ano, Rectal prolapse and polyps, Urinary calculi extraction and certain unique Management principles in  Musculoskeletal and Spine disorders like Intervertebral disc prolapse, Ligament sprains and tear, Rotator cuff injuries using modalities unique to Shalya Tantra such as Agnikarma, Kshara Karma, Kshara Sutra,  Raktha Mokshana, Bandhas and Marma.

Special mention should also be given to the elaborate and comprehensive treatment options provided in ulcer management which goes without saying that Ayurveda holds the ultimate solution for every kinds of ulcers that develop due to various etiological factors.

Finally – Quick diagnosis, fast remedial measures, rehabilitation and utmost emphasis to a Pain and Suffering free life are the main goals of Shalya Tantra.
